referee

On a day that would draw over 8 penalties on SCB’s Ankle Biter White football team, there was no stopping them on their way to their 8th win of the season.

The field at Turkey Hill looked great as SCB Ankle Biter White (#2) took on Westlake Orange (#6).  The Westlake Blue team (#3) had just finished beating SCB Green (#7) and decided to stick around to catch the #2 team in the league battle their B team squad.  Whenever we play Westlake at Turkey Hill it’s always an adventure with the refs and this day would prove no different.

SCB’s defense took the field first and it was evident early that Westlake Orange would have a hard time moving the ball.  Both linebackers/defensive ends, Amir and Kornell looked great getting a jump off the ends and stuffing the run early and what they missed was cleaned up by Klayton and Shane.  Jimmy held down any inside run and it was a quick 3 and out for Westlake that put our offense on the field.

SCB’s offense looked good early with some dive plays by Shane Wood and Klayton’s sweep toward the sidelines.  SCB AB White has a killer one-two punch that most of the other teams do not have.  So if you are weak up front Shane will make you pay and just when you think you stuffed the inside, Klayton bounces it out with some nasty juke moves and a stiff arm that should be illegal.  In fact on a play towards the sidelines in the second qtr. Klayton stiffed armed his opponent only for that opponent to grap Klayton’s face mask and pull him down.  The ref on the sidelines called facemask on the defense which would have been a personal foul but the head referee called a facemask on Klayton, stating that it is illegal for the ball carrier to put his hand on an opponents facemask.  The call was so bad that the line judge who just called it on the defense could do nothing but shrug his shoulders and let the head referee over rule him.  Klayton clearly had an open palm on the guys facemask, he didn’t grap it at all but that was the first of many blown calls that didn’t go SCB’s way.

The SCB Ankle Biter White team got over 8 flags and at least 5 of them were not warranted in my opinion.  There was the facemask call, two TDs that were called back for holding no where near the play, but there was also two obvious fumbles that SCB recovered but for some odd reason the head referee called the play dead.  The QB for Westlake Orange got the ball from center and when trying to hand it off, it fell on the ground.  SCB recovered the ball but was not awarded possesion.  The ref also threw a flag on SCB’s Coach Damien Wood after he was yelling out instructions to his players after he had backed off the play.  I heard Westlake coaches yell “fumble” at their kids and they were not flagged at all, maybe that’s a different situation but the rule is you can’t instruct your kids in any way after you have stepped away or while the play is running.

Even with the refs trying to hold back SCB from dominating the game, it didn’t stop SCB from them from doing just that as Westlake Orange could only muster 1 first down all game.  Westlake Orange scored a TD on a drive that penalized SCB 3 times for false starts and 1 flag on Coach Wood.  The offense wanted so bad to get on the field again after the Westlake TD but conviently the game was called over and SCB won 18-6.

Offensive Player of the Game was Darius.

Defensive Player of the Game was Jayden.

The SCB Play of The Game

The SCB Play of the Game was a Fake dive, HB Sweep ran by Klayton who stiffed armed the only guy that could catch him and walked into the endzone.  If you have been to any of our games lately, you’ve noticed that Klayton has perfected the art of the Stiff Arm.  I talked to Doug; Klayton’s Dad, at halftime and asked him about Klayton Stiff Arm.  He said they call him Handcock after the Will Smith movie and that would prove most accurate.

Go Bears!

I don’t know what it is about night games that make them that much more intense than any game you’ve played, but you definately felt that way when SCB AB White went against Westlake Blue at White Plains Regional Park Tuesday Night.  These teams at the beginning of the game were seperated by 1 game as SCB White came in 6-1 and Westlake Blue came in 5-2.  This game would mean a lot as far as positioning for playoff seeding with only 2 games left to play after this one.

The SCB Bears were coming off a 26-0 win against Indian Head last Saturday where they dominated both sides of the ball but the coaches stressed to their kids that Westlake Blue would not be pushed around and will hit them back if they didn’t give it 100%.

The crowd at the field was pretty impressive for a Tuesday Night game and they settled in as SCB White went on offense first.  It was a nice collection of dive plays to start off the drive and then Klayton bounced one outside for a big gain and then another dive and just like that SCB scored the first touchdown of the game.  The extra point was missed as Shane tried to barrell in and the score remained 6-0 SCB White.

It was Westlake Blue’s turn on the offensive end and after a couple of first downs the HB on misdirection ran through the defense untouched for a 40 yard TD run.  The defense needed to forget in a hurry about what just happened and stop the extra point of Westlake and they did, keeping it a tied game 6-6.

SCB started the second quarter with the ball and had a great drive that took them down to the 10 with just a minute left in the half.  Shane’s off-tackle dive over the right side and blasting through two Westlake defenders to reach the endzone gave SCB a 12-6 lead.  With a successful extra point SCB had a 13-6 lead with 56 seconds remaining.

Westlake had the ball at the 40 yard line and they ran a sweep to the near side.  Klayton zeroed in on the ball carrier and delivered a vicious hit that knocked the ball out and was recovered by DMAN.  SCB ball with less than 50 seconds left.  A dive that went no where and a sweep to the near side that went out of bounds on the 27 left SCB with one final play before the half.  SCB came out and everyone on St. Charles side of the field knew the ball was going to the wide side of the field.  Klayton ran a sweep to the left and with good blocking from that left side of the line; Ray-Ray, Sir, and Shane leading the way, Klayton stiff armed and broke tackles on his way to a 27 yard TD run and score to put SCB up 20-6 at the half.  It was a big play in the game to put SCB up 2 scores knowing Westlake would get the ball first starting the second half.

At half the coaches were so pumped and proud of the boys but told them that it was not over and that they need to come out in the second half with the same intensity.  Well the defense didn’t take note as on the first play in the 3rd qtr by Westlake, the Westlake running back ran 60 yards down the left side of the field for a score.  The Westlake bench, coaches, and parents that came to game were fired up and the Bulldogs were back in the game now only down by one score 20-13.

Where the defense was lacking, the offense picked up the slack.  The line played great all game and opened up holes for Klayton, Shane, and Rutledge in that second half that allowed them to not only get great yardage up the middle but also allowed them to eat up the clock.  SCB scored on their first drive of the 3rd qtr and went up 27-13.  The SCB defense took over from there, not allowing Westlake Blue to get another first down the rest of the game.

The coaches did a great job adjusting to Westlake after the long run and the players executed down the stretch to secure a 27-13 win.

Offensive player of the game was Sir, who did a great job, especially on the long TD run by Klayton to end the first half which was ‘ The SCB Play of the Game’.

Defensive player went to DMAN as he held his own defensively and was alert enough to jump on the ball after Klayton had jarred it loose right before halftime.

I think the Coaches deserve some praise also as they made sure the boys were prepared and made key defensive changes to stifle the Westlake offense in the later part of the 3rd and all of the 4th qtr.

The win moves SCB White to 7-1 (2nd place) and drops Westlake Blue to 5-3 (4th) and not only almost securing at least a #2 seed in the playoffs but gives this team more confidence heading into the last two games of the season.

Our next game is at Turkey Hill this Saturday at 10:15 am against Wetlake Orange (3-4).  Come out and support our kids!

GO BEARS!!!!!

It was wet, windy, slippery and more as the SCB Anklebiter White squad faced off against LaPlata White in a pivotal game.  SCB took the first game in thier last meeting in a tough game that came down to the last play and the same would happen today.  LaPlata White is led by their workhorse of a back #25 who was everything to LaPlata White in the first game.

LaPlata White won the toss and elected to kick and that put Klayton, Shane and the rest of the offense on the field first.  The first drive was a beauty as SCB White marched down the field with a combination of Shane dive plays and Klayton sweep plays.  The drive was capped off by a 2 yard QB sneak by Klayton to put SCB on top 6-0.  The extra point was no good and LaPlata got the ball back for their first drive.

SCB AB White came into the game not giving up a point in the last 10 quarters and that same attitude of not giving up anything held true as SCB stopped LaPlata and forced a turnover on downs.  SCB came right back and Shane broke off a 50 yard TD run.  The play was called back after a block in the after Shane was in the clear but that didn’t matter because on the very next play Klayton ran 40 yards for the TD to put SCB up 12-0.  Once again the extra point was no good.

On LaPlata Whites next possesion #25 broke about 6 tackles and scored on a 60 yard play.  With the extra point being good, LaPlata White pulled within 5 making it 12-7 in favor of SCB.  That would be the score at halftime.

After halftime LaPlata White came out running hard but couldn’t get a short 4th and 3 and SCB took over on downs.  SCB marched down the field methodically and scored to push the lead to 19-7 after the extra point.  LaPlata White showing the true charachter of a good team didn’t get down and came right back and scored to make it 19-14 after the extra point.  The two traded possesions and it wasn’t until 3 minutes left in the game when SCB scored again to make it 26-14.  LaPlata not being outdone hurried up their flow and scored on one play to make it 26-21.  SCB grinded out a couple of first downs to run out the rest of the clock and got the 26-21 victory which moved them into 2nd place in the standings.

To say that the team didn’t face adverities this past week would be an understatement.  The kids were a little rusty from not playing in a week.  Shane Wood had a high fever the night before so they had to practice as if he wasn’t going to play and when he did show up got stung by a bee in the mouth to start the 3rd quarter.  Good job by the coaches on working it all out.

Ankle Biter's White coach Damien Wood talks to his team at halftime where they led 21-0

Ankle Biter White played the Waldorf Wildcats on Saturday. The AB White team went into the game with a 3-1 record and with a defense that had not allowed a TD in the last 6 quarters. They left the game with a 4-1 record and another defensive shutout as they beat the Wildcats 34-0.

Lead by the defensive player of the game; Mathew (6 tackles), the St. Charles Bears Ankle Biter White team totally shut down the Wildcats only allowing 2 first downs the whole game. Take nothing away from the the Offense; who was led by Clayton and Shane who put up 34 points, but it was relentless pressure by the defense that the coaches were praising after the game.
